63 PORTUGUESE BEND ROAD
ROLLING HILLS CALIFORNIA 90274
May 16, 2011
Dear Friends at the Rolling Hills Community Association:
We are writing in regard to the re -paving or patching on Poruguese Bend Road South
that is to begin on May 18, 2011. We recognize the need to periodically service the
roadway to avoid undermining as a result of ground shifts in the area. In the past, we
have seen two approaches to road repair: 1) resurfacing by a professioal asphalt
company, and; 2) intermittent patching efforts by the Rolling Hills Maintenance group.
While we are unsure of the approach to be implemented beginning May 18, we do
understand that financial considerations likely play a role in such decisions. While the
patching method may be more cost effective, the raised and irregular shaped patches
result in jarring and uncomfortable conditions while driving. The irregular shaped
patches create mounds that are not sufficiently rolled out to provide smoothe transition
with the existing roadway, thus creating a very bumpy ride.
We have a 90 year old mother with us a lot of the tiime and the way that the patching is
done causes a bone -shaking and jolting ride. We have to come to an almost complete
stop to traverse each raised bump. In addition to wear on our cars, it is also an
unsightly solution. Therefore, the professional resurfacing is preferable to the patching.
If budget permits, we respectfully request that the city consider professional resurfacing
of the asphalt rather than the rough and uneven mounding to cover emerging cracks in
the asphalt.
Very Sincerely Yours,
Terry and Lynne Macer Rhodes

Dear Dr. Frey:
As in past years, with the approach of the rainy winter season, residents in the Flying
Triangle area are urged to fill any ground fissures which may exist on your property.
Fissures facilitate the infiltration of rain water into the slide plane which can have the effect
of accelerating landslide movement. Filling fissures can also reduce the opportunities for
isuries on your property.
Please consider filling fissures on your property at the earliest possible =.me. Should you
hzve any questions or require further information, please do not hesita a to contact this
oE5ce.
