CL_NWS_240716_SP_CommBinEvent_FireSafety FIRE SAFETY & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Being prepared does not need to happen all at once. Completing one small task at a time will better prepare you and the ones you care about in an emergency. PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY & YOUR ROLLING HILLS COMMUNITY Residents are reminded to maintain the appropriate clearance between structures and vegetation. The LA County Fire Department regulates the first 200 feet from structures in order to establish a fire fighting defensible space. The City Ordinance requires the removal of dead trees and plants on the remainder of your property to help keep our community safe from the threat of wildfires. Residents may wish to consult with their gardener, an arborist or tree service to assess trees and shrubs and for constructive clearance methods that avoid future erosion. If you have questions about clearance requirements, please call the Fire Department at 310-377-1584. To learn more about Home Hardening for your property, watch these videos. In most house fires, a properly prepared or maintained window can provide the quickest, safest, and most immediate way out. Please follow the link to learn more and preparing your home to be F.I.R.E. ready. Don’t wait for fire to strike to think about escape. Planning ahead can save your life! PLANNING FOR EVACUATION Consider the items in your home and which of them are important to you. If you had twenty minutes to evacuate, what would you grab first? With your vehicle size in mind, write a list of belongings that would take priority. If an emergency were to occur and your mind is flooded with stress, you can depend on the list you have already prepared. It is difficult to think about a day like this but being prepared could save time when time is critical. FIREPITS It’s important to remember that the City of Rolling Hills is designated as a Very High Fire Hazard zone. If you plan on using or purchasing a firepit in your backyard, the following are guidelines from the LA County Fire Code to help keep our community safe from wildfires: • Wood-burning firepits are not allowed due to the risk of travelling embers. • Firepits must be located at least 25 feet away from any structures or combustible materials (including patio furniture and plants). • Maintain constant supervision of the fire until it is fully extinguished. • Keep a portable fire extinguisher, or other fire-extinguishing equipment, ready and available for immediate use.
