land movement concerns and installed alternative power
sources are eligible for the waiving of City and County

FIRE DEPARTMENT WARNING: SAFE DISPOSAL
OF OIL AND SOLVENT-SOAKED RAGS
Improperly disposing of oil-soaked or solvent-soaked rags
in regular trash cans can create a serious fire hazard, and
the Fire Department has recently seen an uptick in fires
caused by this issue. To reduce the risk, residents should
allow rags to fully dry in a well-ventilated area before
disposal, store them in a metal container with a tight-
fitting lid if they cannot be dried immediately, and avoid
placing them in trash bins near heat sources. Taking a few
simple precautions can significantly reduce the chance
of accidental ignition.
THANKSGIVING SAFETY TIPS
• Never leave the stove or oven unattended while
cooking - Unattended cooking is the number one
cause of home fires in the U.S. according to the
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
• Keep children away from stove-tops, open fires,
lighters, matches, and candles - keep children at least
3 feet away from the stove while in use or cooking to
help prevent any mishaps.
• Be careful of cords cluttering the kitchen - Electric
mixers, coffee makers, and plate warmers can be an
electrical fire hazard due to the amount of electricity
running through the outlets.
• Test your smoke alarms - Test your smoke alarms
monthly, especially before the start of the holiday
cooking season so you and your family are alerted in
the event of a fire. Replace batteries every six months.
• Have a fire extinguisher – Keep a fire extinguisher easily
accessible, especially in the kitchen during the holiday
season. Pull the pin, aim at the base of the fire, squeeze
the trigger and sweep from side to side.
