The four Peninsula cities have joined together in a multi- jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) update to better prepare for natural hazards Developed in accordance with the federal Disaster Mitigation Act and FEMA/Cal OES guidelines, this coordinated plan identifies long-term strategies to reduce risk to life, property, and critical infrastructure across the Peninsula. Public review is a vital part of the process, and your input helps ensure the plan reflects local knowledge, lived experience, and community priorities before formal adoption. A two-week public review period is now open. Residents are encouraged to read the draft plan and submit comments through the PVPready.gov website. TUMBLEWEED CLEARANCE REMINDERS Pursuant to Municipal Code 8.30.010, residents are required to clear dead or alive tumbleweeds from their properties. During fire and wind events, tumbleweeds become fire fuel. When clearing any dead vegetation, remember to keep a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby in case of sparks from equipment. Tumbleweed seeds sprout in late April and you can see seedlings along lawn edges or driveways. After sprouting, the seedlings have a delicate red/maroon stem/spine and two green fleshy leaves, opposite each other. PULL THE SEEDLING AT THIS POINT! If you remove all the seedlings, you will begin to reduce the “seed bank” hiding in your soil. It could take three years of this diligent effort, pulling each as it sprouts, to completely deplete the tumbleweed seed bank. COYOTE MITIGATION EFFORT UPDATE While the City has a contract with LA County’s Agricultural Commissioner/Weights and Measures Department for assistance with coyote and other wildlife related services, residents have the option to contact Animal Pest Management Services directly if they would like to inquire about their mitigation services at their own expense – they can be reached at (909)591-9551. SPRING STORMWATER REMINDER Late winter and early spring rains can carry sediment, manure, fertilizers, and debris from driveways and barns into our Peninsula’s natural drainage channels. Sweep instead of hosing, keep storm drains clear, and cover loose soil or materials before storms. Small steps help protect our open space and water quality.
