UPDATE ON COYOTES
On February 12th, the City Council approved contracting
with Fernando Barrera’s new private business for
supplemental abatement services on a six -month trial
basis. His services will be utilized when there is
demonstrated, credible evidence that a coyote has
attacked any city resident or demonstrated aggressive
behavior such that, in Fernando’s professional opinion,
the coyote poses a threat to the general public safety.
LA County’s Weights and Measure will continue to be in
the area twice a week. Their main responsibility is to
educate residents on wildlife so there is a peaceful
coexistence. Problems may result if residents “teach ”
coyotes to be dependent on humans.
Coyotes are less likely to dwell on your property if you
take the following steps:
1. Keep garbage cans closed and secure; do not leave
filled plastic trash bags out at night.
2. Keep small pets and their food indoors (especially
overnight) or promptly remove dishes when done.
3. Pick up fallen fruit and cover compost piles.
4. Put away bird feeders at night to avoid attracting
rodents and other coyote prey.
5. Clear brush and dense weeds.
6. Secure yards with RHCA approved fencing

NEW LOMITA SHERIFF’S SENIOR CITIZEN
OUTREACH PROGRAM
The Lomita Sheriff’s Station will be implementing a new
senior outreach program. The program is designed to
check on the well-being of senior citizens who reside in
their policing area and may need assistance. The
program aims to provide seniors with the necessities,
educational information on scams, and elder abuse
prevention. A Sheriff’s representative or volunteer will
make a weekly phone call or home visit to ensure the
well -being of senior residents who are unfortunately not in
regular contact with family members or other loved ones.
If you would like to sign up for the program or receive any
additional information, please call Lomita Station CORE
Deputy Lopez at 310-891-3218 or email at

LA COUNTY FIRE ANNUAL DEFENSIBLE SPACE
CLEARANCE NOTICES & REFEREE HEARING
On January 9, 2024 the LA County Board of Supervisors
passed a resolution declaring that hazardous brush, dry
grass, weeds, combustible growth or flammable
vegetation to include native and ornamental vegetation
where growing upon or in front of said improved property
as specifically described by the parcel number in the
resolution, to be a potential fire hazard or nuisance which,
upon inspection by the County of Los Angeles Fire
Department is verified to be an existing hazard or
nuisance and violation of the County Fire Code
pertaining to clearance of brush and vegetation growth,
must be removed and the nuisance abated by the
Agricultural Commissioner and the cost of removal
assessed upon the land. All property owners having
objection to the removal of brush, dry grass, weeds,
combustible growth, or flammable vegetation, including
natives and ornamentals, are hereby notified that they
may attend one of five brush clearance referee hearings.
Residents can attend the nearest location event held on
February 28, 2024 from 5pm to 8pm in Rancho Palos
Verdes at the Palos Verdes Art Center – 5504 Crestridge
Road.
TUMBLEWEED CLEARANCE REMINDERS
Pursuant to Rolling Hills Municipal Code 8.30.010, residents
are required to clear any dead or alive tumbleweeds
from their properties. When fires occur and winds pick up,
tumbleweeds travel and become fire fuel. When clearing
dead vegetation, please remember to keep a fire
extinguisher or a water hose nearby in the event of sparks
from equipment. Tumbleweed seeds begin sprouting in
late April. You will most likely see the seedlings along the
edges of lawns or driveways. After sprouting, the
seedlings look harmless. They have a red or maroon stem
and start with two bright green fleshy leaves, which are
opposite each other. THIS IS THE TIME TO PULL THE
SEEDLING! The delicate spine at the tip of each fleshy leaf
is how you know it is a tumbleweed seedling. If you
remove all the seedling tumbleweeds in your yard, you
will effectively begin to reduce the “seed bank” that is
hiding in your soil. It could take three years of this diligent
effort, pulling each as it sprouts, to completely deplete
the tumbleweed seed bank.
